Environmental EducationThe obvious focus of The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education is environmental education, but the Center provides visitors with much more than the basic, formal science lesson. As one of the oldest urban environmental centers in the nation, we offer a wide variety of programs and opportunities for all ages, from a quiet trail for a weekend hike, to summer camp, academic year programs for children, and even graduate courses and other learning opportunities for adults. Green Woods Charter SchoolSince 2002 The Center has had an exciting partnership with the K-8th grade Green Woods Charter School, which is located onsite. Students learn in and from the dynamic natural environment at the Center. To view the Center’s wide variety of educational programs for children and adults, visit our Programs page. The Philadelphia School at The Schuylkill CenterOutdoor education has been integral to The Philadelphia School's program from its inception in 1972. By studying animals, plants, soil, and weather, TPS students develop the confidence to grapple with increasingly abstract concepts. The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education has been chosen by The Philadelphia School as the new site for its ‘Country Classroom’. The Schuylkill Center and teachers from The Philadelphia School will work in partnership to teach students how to learn from, protect, and enjoy our land. Throughout the school year, TPS students will make twenty visits to The Center’s 350 acres of woodlands, meadows, ponds, wetlands and hiking trails. TPS teachers will also participate in professional development activities.
